Dublin, IRELAND – April 24th, 2012 – CommProve, a leading provider of network monitoring and business solutions for analogue and LTE mobile networks, today argues that real-time cell-awareness is the key to mobile network operators simultaneously increasing ARPU whilst preventing OTT revenue erosion.

Combined with policy management, real-time cell awareness provides mobile operators with the opportunity to customize subscriber quality of experience with – for example – speed boosts and priority network use on a per subscriber or application basis.

Speaking at the Policy Control & Real Time Charging conference, Dr Lars Pedersen, CommProve CEO, said: “Adding real-time intelligence at the individual cell level is crucial for operators that want to best utilize their existing network assets to improve the subscriber experience.”

With more and more mobile subscribers demanding content on their own terms, operators are under increasing pressure to improve the customer experience while at the same time reduce operational costs.

Real-time cell awareness enables real-time customization of the subscriber experience. For the first time effective policy control can be implemented and managed minute-by-minute at the subscriber level.

CommProve predicts that advanced operators will use cell awareness solutions to manage customer engagement and increase ARPU, while creating a platform to differentiate their services and prevent revenue erosion.

By including real-time cell awareness operators can:

Make CapEx savings – cells can often operate at capacities as low as 25 per cent without operators being alerted, as they do not have the appropriate tools to monitor cell capacity. Maximizing the traffic load on existing network infrastructure saves CapEx from deferred capacity growth.

Avoid revenue leakage from subscribers not being able to access resources can also be substantial, an example of the potential impact is shown below.

Example Use Case*:

Monthly revenue from 1 BTS with congestion

€55,500

Monthly revenue from 1 BTS without congestion

€57,200

Estimated number of congested BTSs

8,400

Estimated number of congested hours (in a month)

Reduce subscriber churn - with real-time visibility of subscriber QoE, operators can better manage customer satisfaction and subsequently address any churn issues.

Offer premium services - based on real-time visibility of the subscriber QoE, operators can offer real-time premium services and drive incremental revenue growth.

This week is the Policy Control & Real-time Charging event in Amsterdam. With the enormous growth in mobile data traffic*, mobile network operators are concerned with questions that are either directly or indirectly linked to real-time visibility. For example, can you get more capacity out of a network by evening out the load? And can you safely offer premium services in real-time and rely on the network to come through on the promise? If so, can this be a driver for incremental revenue growth? These are the types of questions that are being asked at the conference.

Technology has now evolved to the point where operators can leverage real-time cell awareness – a sub minute-by-minute view of network performance right down to the cell level. When connected with the operator’s policy management solution, real-time intelligence at the cell-level allows services such as speed boosts, for example, to be instantly customized to the subscriber, and traffic and service prioritization deployed cell-by-cell in real-time.

Adding real-time intelligence at the individual cell level is absolutely crucial for operators that want to best utilize their existing network assets to improve the subscriber experience as we outlined in today’s announcement Real-time Cell Awareness Key to Sweating Mobile Network Assets

For customers, this guarantees the highest quality of experience, for the operator, real-time cell awareness guarantees the ability to offer premium real-time services as well as improved network congestion management.

Lars Pedersen, CommProve CEO

*According to the latest Cisco Visual Networking Index report, monthly global mobile data traffic will exceed 10 exabytes in 2016.

Analysys Mason predicts decoupling of revenue and network costs as operators prioritise bandwidth resource

LONDON, UK, 15 February 2012 – Mobile operators will abandon network cost-based pricing to focus on premium services, as they look to reduce churn and maintain revenues according to a new paper released by global telecoms, media and technology (TMT) adviser Analysys Mason. This transformation, enabled by new end-to-end approaches to network management, arrives in the face of growing competition from over-the-top (OTT) services and rapidly rising data costs.

The report estimates that the volume of wireless data traffic worldwide will grow at an annual rate of 67% between 2010 and 2015. During the same period, data revenue per gigabyte is projected to fall from USD23.21 to USD4.27. The report reveals that, in order to handle this growth whilst assuring revenues, operators are increasingly looking to offer new services such as temporary network speed boost and tiered bandwidth allocation to create a premium service for high value customers.

Patrick Kelly, Research Director at Analysys Mason, believes that average revenue per user (ARPU) will increasingly be related to additional services: “Operators are facing increasing pressure to deliver a high quality service despite growing data demands. The only realistic way to do that is to decouple ARPU from network costs and instead align it to the delivery of premium services.

“Previously, there was a lack of availability of tools to support complex segmentation of mobile data services. As the focus shifts towards maintaining revenue for data services, more operators are adopting the increasingly sophisticated tools to manage tiered services,” said Kelly.

Interviews with operators have shown that the main obstacle to the delivery of these services is their ‘silo’ approach to network delivery, which hinders a full view of the customer experience. Operators are increasingly employing end-to-end network monitoring solutions to eliminate these silos and create real-time, end-to-end monitoring.

“The rise of data has created a clear and urgent need for operators to introduce new ways of dealing with network traffic such as prioritisation of higher tier subscribers. End-to-end monitoring and analytics make that possible, but operators need to educate customers about the requirement for tiered traffic to ensure continued quality of service,” commented Lars Pederson, CEO, CommProve.

Operators implementing this new, unified approach to network monitoring – including Vodacom, part of Vodafone – reported reduced churn, increased levels of customer care and a renewed ability to differentiate and remodel their services around premium offerings.

In the report, Analysys Mason urges operators to:

Increase adoption of network monitoring to eliminate silos and more fully understand the user experience

Take advantage of real-time data collection and analysis to enable traffic prioritisation and tiered billing models

Adopt open platforms to unify the entire network management system

The paper, sponsored by CommProve, a leading provider of network monitoring and business solutions for mobile networks, surveyed a number of mobile network operators. The research investigates operator strategies to tackle growing data needs and loss of revenue to OTT services.

The full paper can be downloaded here and highlights from the white paper are also available via Slideshare here.

Dublin, IRELAND –– Nov. 15th, 2011 – In order to support mobile network operators (MNOs) that are looking to alleviate the strain on their networks and offer new services, CommProve, a leading provider of network monitoring and business solutions for mobile networks, has today announced the launch of its BCN RAN Insight application. BCN RAN Insight enables operators to intelligently manage their networks and perform customer experience management in real-time.

CommProve BCN RAN provides operators with the ability to:

Take policy management actions only in congested areas where overall user performance is at risk while limiting actions in non-critical areas

Employ smart enforcing rules so that premium customers can be protected even in congested areas

Offer special pricing to users if they are accessing data services in non-critical RAN areas or promoting contract upgrades limited in time securing throughput rates to subscribers that join the offer.

“As more and more subscribers are downloading bandwidth intensive data and applications while on the move, operators are increasingly looking at deploying solutions which will enable them to maximize their network resources while growing revenue,” said Dr. Lars Pedersen, CommProve CEO. “CommProve BCN RAN Insight provides operators with such a solution, and it’s key to our company vision – enabling business, customer and network (BCN) intelligence at your finger tips.”

CommProve BCN RAN Insight

BCN RAN Insight collects and processes in real-time measurements from different interfaces of the radio access network (RAN). Deep packet inspection (DPI) measurements and RAN quality measurements are collected 24×7 network wide. Depending on the network deployment and the desired accuracy different interfaces can be probed: typically Iub/Iups are monitored. DPI measurements provide information concerning application and network level delays, re-transmissions, peak and average throughput, application type breakdown, both at the user-level and at the cell-level.

The cell-level information is essential in understanding if, how, and where, the load generated by the user is affecting the network availability for other users. This information is generated leveraging the BCN RAN’s correlation capabilities; user mobility is tracked and the actual cells serving the user are saved in a call detail record (CDR), along with all relevant signaling information.
